Why do humans like different stuff . . . The Big Question

I have just enjoyed a rather good Indian takeaway and am now drinking a nice cup of tea made by me. Interestingly the Indian restaurant makes great food but their tea is rubbish. I have tried to get them to make weak tea in the past but they just can’t understand the concept and it arrives like a cup of crude oil, ready to take the hairs off your chest and make you sing like Tiny Tim on helium.

Anyway this has made me ponder one of those big questions which is the vague theme of this year’s blog. Only because you were all getting bored with the day to day life of me doing my day to day stuff and writing a daily diary.  Yes the big question is . . . . . . Why do humans like different stuff. . . .  At first this might seem like a silly question but is it, you see in nature Lions eat Gazelles or Zebra, they dont go . .  AAAAhhhhh I wanted vanilla ice cream I don’t like raspberry ripple ice cream.  So why are humans so damn fickle about stuff why will one chap like pink and one like orange but with a subtle hint of blue.

I think we have to put this down to evolutionary development. To many (well mostly humans) humans are the pinnacle of evolutionary development on earth, we have invented the wheel and the screwdriver. However all species of critter on Earth will diverse to some degree in order to cope with environmental changes that may occur such as drought, flooding, temperature change or food sources vanishing. The problem for mankind is that humans are the first critter on planet Earth to change his environment to suit him rather than the other way round. This is OK while its all in control but just lately it has all sort of got out of hand, humans are ironically too successful as a species and have to put it bluntly buggered the planet a bit (I know a strong word for me indeed).

The thing is though, we are at the end of the day just another critter evolving on planet Earth in order to continue as a successful species, we are programmed to do this and have no free will to do anything else.  But as we are now slightly detached from nature thanks to things like central heating, cars, aeroplanes, supermarkets, chairs, Indian takeaways and many many other things, our genetic diversity has gone a bit odd taking an un-nature turn.

What this means is that some of us will like flock wallpaper while other will prefer a nice painted wall, or maybe you will find you prefer a city flat to a county cottage in the country. All well and good, but I suspect when it comes to the crunch and our environment makes a sudden change it seems unlikely that only those who eat coffee fudge ice cream and prefer a nice floral wall paper with matching rugs will survive. The rest of us dying out because of our taste in soft furnishing and liking lemon bon bons from the old corner sweet shop which sadly has become extinct.

  1. One of the things interesting about evolution is the evolution of the theories of evolution.

    1. I think all these theories are are part of a huge conspiracy theory to undermine my theory.

  2. Our evolutionary decisions have been dumbed down a bit but I imagine if you were to break it down, to the last tiny particle, there would be some reason for the flocked wallpaper...perhaps to quiet the room from approaching apocalyptic zombie ears.
Hi I'm Bushman new ambassador for the A to Z. Thought I'd stop by and say Hi!

  3. I personally find it very annoying that humans like different stuff, because it has led to the situation where coffee-flavoured chocolates are infrequently included in selection boxes.

    2. Coffee flavored chocolate AND chocolate flavored coffee. On the same planet. At the same time.

  4. Eeek! I did have some things to say about this very interesting topic, but I suddenly caught sight of the letters A and Z on the right hand side of the screen and a sudden sense of doom befell me. I now must leave forthwith, before the fear encapsulates my soul.

    1. Miss Lily I will be writing about this (A to Z) soon. I can get away with doing the A to Z many many times because of the way I do it. Although I am involved in working on the house rather a lot at present so it could all go horribly wrong.

But I have a cunning plan.

  5. How very interesting--this very topic is frequently on my mind and I was considering posting about this on Wednesday or some other day perhaps. I've posted on this before in fact though it may not have seemed as such.

One thing is that you posed the question in a different phrasing than I had thought to do, but it is a completely sensible way of saying it. I guess it's like you saying an "Indian takeaway" (which I suppose is the British manner of describing this sort of restaurant) where we in the U.S. would say "Indian carry-out". I guess there could be certain things inferred from "takeaway" as opposed to "carry-out" such as issues of colonialism versus the work of carrying something out of an establishment to eat the the comfort and safety of ones own home. But I'll leave those differences to another post.

My thoughts on this topic continually come up when I do one of my Battle of the Bands posts and I'm baffled by people who dislike what I like in the way of music not to mention the people who just say anything because they don't really like my Battle of the Bands posts and they reluctantly go along because they've wasted their time coming to my site and can't leave without just voting on a pick even if it's not one of the choices.

Anyhow, the matter of personal taste and preference is something I do often wonder about. I guess if everyone liked the same stuff then it would be a pretty boring world. Then on the other hand I'd say there are plenty of people who would prefer boring to having to choose between one thing or another. That would make life easier. Then we wouldn't even have to decide about which takeaway or carry-out to go to. We could just sit at home where a bring-it-to-me would deliver the same stuff to everyone including a tea that everyone found acceptable. Wait! What's with this tea thing anyway? I'd rather have a Coke.

    1. AH Yes there are many words that are different between the USA and Britain and many of those that are the same are spelt differently. This is all part of the process of human Biodiversity (DAMN I wish I had remembered that when I wrote the post). It means that sadly due to a lack of communication between our counties that all you lot over there will probably become extinct first.

I am a bit naughty and tend not to do the battle of the bands, but this is purely a time issue thing. . . so much to do no time to do sort of stuff , , ,

I think I prefer takeaway to carry-out but that might be my British conditioning much like you cant beat a nice cup of tea.

  6. Lions might not, but domestic house cats... there's fickle about food, bedding, and whatever else.

Also interesting is people who change what they like after brain trauma or surgery. And pregnant women who crave foods they normally can't stand.

    Very interesting topic.

    1. It is indeed a huge topic but strangely not one that you hear about that much. Pregnant women can like all sorts of weird things, I know someone who would love to chew a bit of coal.

  7. I often wondered about why people like different things, or rather, why they DON'T like the same things.
Mrs H loves Mushrooms, but I can't stand them.
She also likes spending money, naughty vampires with no clothes on and Turkish delight... all of which I have issues with in one form or another.

A very interesting subject and one I shall be pondering whilst drinking very strong pint pots of tea!

Naked Vampires ? Mrs H sounds a bit of a one. Best not to look I think, or rub garlic all over your body. . . its what I do

You cant beat a nice cup of tea. . . I have said this twice now so it must be true.
